When Toronto queers organized Pride events in the ’70s and took to the streets in protest of the bathhouse raids in 1981, they did it without permission or funding. What they had was bravery—a bravery that has been diluted and anesthetized by the city, corporations and right wing interest groups. These authorities have since wedged themselves between our queer communities and an event that began because people were fierce enough to stand up to the very powers that are now attempting to control our hard won revolution.
